How Do I Choose a Podcast Topic?

So, you like the idea of having your own podcast and you are ready to give it a shot. What should you talk about? Choosing a topic for a podcast can be the second hardest thing that you will do while creating your podcast. You were wondering about the hardest? Well, that would be choosing a name, but we will cover that at a later time.

The easiest way to choose a topic is to pick something that you are passionate about. The second easiest is to choose something you would like to learn about. The first option, picking something you are passionate about, should be pretty self-explanatory. If you are passionate about a topic chances are you are knowledgeable. Maybe it’s wrestling, crime, or beekeeping. Whatever it is you have the ability to talk about it for days.

The second option, choosing something you would like to learn about, can be a little more challenging, but also exciting. This option gives you the ability to expand your interest and bring others along for the ride. Maybe you always wanted to know more about wrestling, crime, or beekeeping (I don’t know why I’m stuck on those topics), this is a chance for you to find out. Be warned, with either way you go choosing your topic you will need to research and have a clear understanding of your subject matter.

Now, contrary to popular belief, you don’t want “everybody” as your audience. Some of the most successful podcasts cover topics that are extremely specific. So it’s important to refine your topic to the point where you feel comfortable. Thinking about your audience will help you craft your podcast successfully. Some questions to ask yourself during this process, what does my audience hope to learn, what problem am I helping them solve, how am I improving their life?

At the end of the day, no matter what you choose, you will need to differentiate yourself from other podcasts in the same genre. Don’t get me wrong, multiple podcasts of the same topic can exist, but you have to set yourself apart if you want to be successful. Maybe you have a cohost, maybe you choose an interview style, or maybe you have a completely different take on the subject matter than everyone else.

Once you have picked your topic and your differentiator it will be time to get started with the process. We will have more articles coming soon that talk about the different ways to get started podcasting. No matter what you decide the most important thing to remember is to have fun. This whole adventure should be fun and enjoyable. If you have picked your podcast topic we would love to hear how you did it. Please feel free to comment or reach out on social media.
